Ring Shopping 101 – Happy National Proposal Day!

Happy National Proposal day!

This is one of our favorite holidays here at Bellamere, because it means more of you lovebirds will be popping the question and/or saying yes today!  So to honor this fun holiday, and no we did not make it up, we wanted to talk about something that happens before the big proposal: choosing that Perfect Ring!

Now that you’ve found your soulmate it’s time to find that forever accessory!

Most girls have been dreaming of their Wedding day since they were young and know exactly what that perfect ring will look like. Solitaire or Halo? Princess cut or Oval? You may know, but does he?

Are you allowed to go ring shopping together?
Some girls dream of being completely surprised with a beautiful ring from the man of there dreams. But let’s be real, surprises aren’t for everyone. So this one is totally up to you. If you have a very particular taste or know exactly what you want, shopping together might be a good idea. I’m not saying you need to pick the exact ring but instead you can choose a cut and style that you love and let him/her do the rest.

These days you can even ring shop from the comfort of your couch, with the help of websites like you can custom design your ring together and have it delivered to your house in 7-14 days. Remember that even if you pick out a ring together, you can still be completely surprised by the way he/she proposes!

Are you allowed to drop hints?

We’ve all done it ladies. Whether it’s leaving a magazine open on the coffee table so he can see that cashmere sweater you want for Christmas or accidentally texting him a link to that Kate Spade Purse for your Birthday, dropping those not so subtle hints has become second nature for most women. So don’t feel if you decide to drop a hint or two to avoid the the risk of a Carrie Bradshaw/Aiden situation (before Samantha intervened). Maybe design your dream ring on and ‘forget’ to close the browser : )

Remember that at the end of the day, whether you’re surprised by the ring or not, you’ve found that special someone.

Narrow your choices

Once you start looking at rings, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the sparkle and lose sight of what you really wanted in the first place. So before you hit the stores, narrow down your choices.

Do you want something very modern, vintage or simple and traditional? What color metal do you prefer: yellow, white or rose? What cut do you like: Princess, Oval or Round? The choices are endless.

Your Budget and the Four C’s

Balance your budget around the four C’s. Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. You want to make sure you get the best looking diamond for your money, and there is a trade off between the size and the quality. All four factors are equally important in determining the final cost of a diamond. The colour of a diamond refers to the amount of yellow, brown or gray tones that the stone has. For the best quality and look you want to stay between D – K on the colour scale. The Clarity refers to the tiny natural imperfections that occur in all diamonds. According to most experts, this generally has the least impact on a diamond’s appearance, so don’t base any big decisions on this. Of the four C’s, the cut has the biggest influence on the diamond’s look and sparkle, so it’s usually recommended to choose the highest cut grade within your budget. The carat is one we are all most familiar with, but what many people don’t know if the carat refers to the weight of the diamond and not the actual size. Once you’ve chosen the cut, colour, and clarity, it should be easy to determine the carat that will fit within your budget.

Congrats to all you newly-engaged and soon to be newly-engaged couples out there!
